Like most people I want the best for my dog. With all of those pet food contaminations it really makes you wonder, how safe is pet food? While watching Inside Edition the other night I learned about the book Pet Food Nation, a cookbook for you beloved cats or dogs.
Pet Food Nation features :
- How to transition your pet from commercial food to a healthier diet
- Six signs of dietary problems with your pet
- Why homemade food is better for your pet
- The best diet for an older pet
- What to feed your breed
- Basic easy recipes for dogs and cats
Here are two recipes from the book:
A Bulk Recipe for Dogs
2 Tbsp. oil (organic oils: olive, coconut, safflower, fish oil or cod-liver oil)
3/4 cup water or low-sodium broth
1 1/2 cup pureed chopped or lightly steamed vegetables
1 cup well-cooked grains (oatmeal, barley, rice, millet, quinoa, or buckwheat)
1lb. raw meat, poultry, or cooked fish (salmon, mackerel, whiting, cod, sardines)
Mix thoroughly and freeze in daily portions (2 to 3 cups for 20 pound dog). Thaw and warm before serving (do not microwave). Feel free to top with sprinkling of high-quality kibble or 1 Tbsp. of full-fat yogurt. Cooked organ meat (1/4 cup) can be added several times a week.
Fish and Oats
3 cups cooked oatmeal
1 cup fish (mackerel, salmon, whiting, sardine -- canned salmon or sardines are okay)
1 cup of green beans
1/2 tsp. eggshell powder
This will make 2 servings for a 20-pound dog.
